The conversation
What can a life in medicine become? Drawing on his book Letters to a Young Doctor, Dr. Chopra invites clinicians to consider the many ways they can contribute: caring for patients, teaching, researching, writing, leading and innovating. Stories of Paul Farmer, Abraham Verghese, Burton Rose, Sanjeev Arora and Florence Nightingale illustrate how service, curiosity and imagination can shape a career. The conversation then turns to two underpinnings of success—grit and happiness—and the role of friendship, forgiveness, service and gratitude. For students, early-career clinicians and experienced practitioners alike, it is an invitation to reflect on professional possibilities, what brings joy and how to live with purpose.
